Work - Rihanna ft. Drake

The song Work will definitely get to my list of songs for work out. But sadly I haven't started one yet. The Work is a song by Rihanna and Drake and it was released in January 2016. The genre is dancehall. That is just a version of reggae. It's a genre of Jamaican popular music.

Work was written by many artist and some of them are Jamaican. They probably used all their knowledge and vibes from their roots. On Complex website Zach Frydenlund worte an interview about their song making process: »we were all staying at Drake’s house in Los Angeles. We all stayed there for three or four days, and literally it was like a beat factory. Everyone was sitting there working and collaborating with each other. (...)We basically banged this track out in half an hour, and we were just jamming out because we could just feel that island vibe, and we knew that the sound of the industry is sort of shaking up its little island vibe, and we knew we were really authentic, we had the Jamaican culture, and we took it upon ourselves to hone in on that and make our new futuristic dancehall songs that we like to call the new wave.«

Song is written in the key of G# minor, but it is full of energy and my first thought was, I should use lots of hashtags such as dance, shakeyourbooty, twerk, can'twaitforsummer, let'shitthedanceflor and others. I put it in the key of C major. Whole song is based on four chords. But the melody part is a lot more challenging.

The meldoy is something totally different than the lyrics. Lyrics are about working man and work is his priority. On the other side there is his lonley and sad girlfriend, who wants him to come back home and give her some of his time, but all she gets are his work excuses, so their relationship is really fragile. Lyrics are a little bit »blurry«, hard to understand without reading them and maybe even with reading them. I can easily understand why there are such a mixed opinions, between liking and disliking the song, even among chritics. But never the less it is very succesful. It topped the Billboard (hot 100) and it also reached number one in many countries. I think that Work is one of few songs with genre dancehall that made it so big on Billboard.
